Working in the heat

When working in a hot environment it is so important to stay hydrated and cool in order to prevent any kind of heat related illness.

It seems logical, but sometimes we get so involved with our work we don't realise our body is overheating until it is too late.

This is when heat exhaustion and heat stroke can occur.

Common factors that lead to heat stress include:
- high temperatures & humidity
- direct sun or heat
- limited air movement
- physical exertion
- poor physical condition
- certain medication

The symptoms of Heat Exhaustion include: headaches, dizziness, light headed, fainting, weakness, moist skin, mood changes, irritability and confusion

The symptoms of Heat Stroke include: Dry, hot skin with no sweating, mental confusion or loss of consciousness, seizures, convulsions.

The best way to avoid heat stress is to keep out of direct sunlight for extended periods of time and find shade, avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks and heavy meals and wear lighter clothing rather than dark colours and heavy material.
